EXAMPLES & SOLUTIONS
Anchor 2
The distributive property multiplies terms of an expression by the same amount.
Numbers outside the parentheses are multiplied by the numbers inside the parentheses.
DISTRIBUTING EXPRESSIONS
Steps to discovering how to distribute expressions
Example expression: 5 (7 + 9)
Step One:
Multiply the number outside the parenthesis by each number inside the parenthesis.
5 * 7 = 35
5 * 9 = 45
Step Two:
Add the two products together.
35 + 45 = 80
DISTRIBUTING EXAMPLES
Rules and examples of distributing expressions
Rule: Multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as multiplying each separately.
GROUPS OF NUMBERS
80 = 5 (7 + 9)
80 = 5 * (16)
80 = 80
DISTRIBUTING
80 = (5 * 7) + (5 * 9)
80 = 35 + 45
80 = 80
Formula:
a(b + c) = ab + ac
Formula:
a(b - c) = ab - ac
Formula:
-a(b + c) -ab + ac
Formula:
-a(b - c) = -ab + ac
5(7 + 9) = (5 * 7) + (5 * 9)
= 35 + 45
= 80
5(7 - 9) = (5 * 7) - (5 * 9)
= 35 - 45
= -10
-5(7 + 9) = (-5*7) + (-5*9)
= -35 + (-45)
= -35 - 45
= -80
-5(7 - 9) = (-5*7) + (-5*- 9)
= (-5*7) + (45)
= -35 + 45
= 10
